Boris Brevde
Boris was raised in the former Soviet Union Republic of Ukraine and is the winner of several prestigious awards as both a teacher and competitor. He left his country in 1982 as a political refugee and became an American citizen. In the Ukraine, he attended an academy that prepared him as a dance teacher.
Boris is the recipient of more than 20 Top Teacher awards in North America in several national Pro-Am and Professional categories. In 2005, he won the number one Top Teacher award at the prestigious Yankee Classic, an internationally-recognized annual dance competition in Boston. During the same competitions he also took home the number one studio award. Many colleges and universities offer classes or clubs in ballroom dancing. Competition between schools is common. He noted that his students have regularly placed in competitions at Tufts and Yale universities and his adults have consistently won top student awards in competitions throughout the U.S. One couple, he said, placed fifth out of 100 competing dance couples. In a competition last June at the Cambridge Marriott Hotel, Euroballroom won top studio. He also has been named top teacher for two years running.
Boris won his first competition at the Ukrainian Regional Competition at the age of seven. At 16, Brevde earned a degree in Ballroom Dance and was graduated as an instructor from the College of Culture in the City of Donetz in the Ukraine. In addition to teaching, he also worked with a ballet troupe for two years. In his early twenties, Brevde competed throughout Russia and, at 24, became an owner and instructor at one of the first privately- owned dance studios in the USSR. There, he specialized in teaching children the art of ballroom dancing. Six years later, Brevde came to the U.S. and began teaching in the Boston area with the Arthur Murray Dance Studio.
While teaching, Brevde met Kelly Ann Denning, another instructor, whom he married in 2004. In addition to being husband and wife, they are also dance partners and business partners. Brevde and Kelly have competed professionally in American Style Rhythm. During that time, Brevde owned and operated Euroballroom DanceSport studio in Allston for two years. He then moved his business to Newton in 2005.
